Bloom County is a small town in the American Midwest, populated by a lawyer, a boy reporter, a neurotic child with an anxiety closet, a penguin called Opus and a cat called Bill who is mostly tongue and hairballs. It is a political satire of the Reagan years, and also a surreal comedy about a penguin's search for his mother.
Breathed won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987, and the strip was one of the most popular of the 1980s. It was revived online in 2015, and Opus remains one of the great comic-strip characters.
