On a First World War battlefield, a soldier named Lord Henry Baltimore wounds a vampire, and in return the creature destroys his family and unleashes a plague that brings the undead across Europe. Baltimore, now with a wooden leg, spends the rest of his life hunting it down.
Born from an illustrated novel that Mignola wrote with Christopher Golden, the comic is grimmer and more single-minded than Hellboy, a gothic revenge story set in a Europe that has barely survived one catastrophe and is sliding into another. Ben Stenbeck's art owes a clear debt to Mignola's own, and is excellent.
