American Gods

Novel by Neil Gaiman · adapted by P. Craig Russell, drawn by Scott Hampton · Dark Horse, 2017–19

Shadow Moon gets out of prison to learn that his wife has been killed, and he is almost immediately hired as a bodyguard by a con man called Mr Wednesday, who is rather older, and rather more divine, than he looks. The old gods brought to America by immigrants are dying for lack of belief, and a war with the new gods of media and technology is coming.

The adaptation runs to three volumes, with Russell handling the script and layouts and Scott Hampton the art, and it is faithful, measured and handsome, with a gallery of guest artists handling some of the novel's interludes. It is a more patient version of the story than the television series that ran at about the same time.
