Adam Strange

Gardner Fox, Mike Sekowsky, Carmine Infantino · Showcase #17, DC, 1958

Archaeologist Adam Strange is hit by a teleportation beam and whisked to the planet Rann, where he becomes a jetpack-wearing hero and falls for a princess called Alanna. The catch: the beam wears off, and he is dumped back on Earth, so every story begins with him racing to catch the next one. It is the longest-distance relationship in comics.

It's DC's take on the planetary romance of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Mars books, drawn with crisp elegance by Carmine Infantino. Each story tends to end with Adam out-thinking the menace rather than out-punching it.
