Y2K—the Apocalypse movie you didn’t know you needed (trailer).

Just when you thought the Y2K panic of 1999 was nothing more than a nostalgic punchline, along comes Kyle Mooney’s Y2K, a disaster comedy horror film that asks, “What if the millennium bug wasn’t just a tech glitch, but a full-blown, technology-fueled apocalypse?” That’s right, folks—get ready for a world where your Tamagotchi turns into a bloodthirsty tyrant, your dial-up modem becomes a weapon of mass destruction, and your VHS tapes start spitting out demons (we always knew those rewinds were sinister).

Set to drop on December 6, 2024, this cinematic rollercoaster stars Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison as two high school losers who decide to crash the coolest New Year’s Eve party of 1999—only to find out that, surprise, every piece of technology on Earth has suddenly come to life with one goal: annihilate humanity. Think of it as War of the Worlds, but with more teen angst, a lot more sarcasm, and Fred Durst playing… Fred Durst. Because why not?

The film, which had its world premiere at South by Southwest (where it undoubtedly left the audience questioning their love of retro tech), features a cast that’s a nostalgia bomb in itself. Alicia Silverstone? Check. The Kid Laroi? Sure, why not. And let’s not forget that Weta Workshop, the geniuses behind The Lord of the Rings, have blessed this movie with effects that will make you seriously reconsider your relationship with your old Game Boy.

So, if you’ve ever wondered what would happen if your Walkman decided it was time for world domination, or if your Windows 95 PC grew legs and an attitude problem, Y2K is the film for you. Mark your calendars for December 6th—assuming your Y2K-proofed digital assistant doesn’t decide to erase the date out of sheer spite.
