Humanity is faced with a dilemma when confronted with the apparently empty cosmos. We’re keen to know whether we’re the only ones in the Milky Way. We want to shout out and disclose ourselves to anybody who is looking, yet it may be the last thing we do.
Because it’s possible that the cosmos isn’t empty. It may be teeming with civilisations, but they are all hiding from one another. Perhaps in the past, civilisations that drew notice were wiped off by unseen arrows.
