Why humans should leave a time capsule on the moon for future alien civilizations (science video).

In this science video special, Lex Fridman and David Kipping have a conversation about extraterrestrial civilizations and habitable worlds. Have you regularly wondered what would happen to humanity if we were the only civilization to ever exist in the galaxy? It’s a sobering thought, but one that scientists have pondered for decades. After all, the likelihood of intelligent life arising on a planet is incredibly low, and the odds of that life lasting long enough to develop space travel are even lower.

So, what if humanity is the sole civilization to grace the galaxy? Should we just accept our fate and disappear into the void, leaving no trace of our existence behind? Absolutely not! If we are the only society to exist, it’s our duty to leave a time capsule on the moon for any future life forms that may arise.

Think about it, if we bury a repository of knowledge on the lunar surface, some advanced alien race might find it millions or even billions of years from now. They would learn about our history, our culture, and our achievements. They would see that we existed, and that we were intelligent and curious beings, just like them.

But what if we’re not the only society to exist in the galaxy? What if there are other civilizations out there that have already left time capsules for us to find? This is a possibility, and one that scientists have been searching for decades. The moon, for example, has been studied for generations and has many interesting artifacts abandoned by humans, such as the American flag planted by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo 11 mission.

So, what should we drop in this capsule? Well, that’s up to us to decide. It could include a history of humankind, our achievements, our culture, and even a message to any subsequent life forms that may find it.

If there were once other civilizations out there, we should keep searching for their time capsules, and learn from them. After all, we are all just tiny specks in the vastness of space, and it’s important for us to scrawl our mark and be remembered.
