Is it just me, or is this an entire urban horror film franchise basically just riffing on the original classic Star Trek episode, Amok Time?
Not ‘Amok Time’ – there’s a world (sorry) of difference between individual male Vulcans in hormonally-induced infrequent rutting frenzy and the calendar-set 12 hours of anything-goes mayhem… even if that date is the vernal equinox.
I’ve been racking my brains to identify another TOS episode which might serve – unsuccessfully. There are a few possible historical inspirations (various Roman orgiastic festivals, perhaps, or the drug and alcohol inspired Bacchanalias in Greece) but I can’t think of anything that comes close to the cynical government-sanctioned Purge.
