Star Trek Cats by Jenny Parks (book review)

There are times when you wonder where your life is going, times of anxiety and stress and for this I recommend ‘Star Trek Cats’. Much like the cat memes on the Internet there is no earthly or even unearthly reason for producing a book about ‘Star Trek’ with cats in it. Put simply, the world has gone mad and we are forever down the rabbit hole but we might as well go with it.

Jenny Parks may have had this idea herself or maybe a committee who thought people like ‘Star Trek’ and they like dressing up cats so let’s put the two together. Let’s examine this idea then shall we.

The book is a small format hardback. Easy to hold in one hand whilst posting on Twitter and looking at other pictures of cats and contemplating that the cats who had bit parts in the original series are long dead.

The inside page identifies our catty-heroes in their guise as members of the Star Trek crew. Uhura is the most fetching with that earring. I fear a cat would find that most impractical whilst trying to stalk birds. Scotty is slightly overweight as was his cuddly human counterpart. Kirk is not seen to be wearing a corset in this version. He does look a little smug here, too. Spock is of course quite an exotic breed and has the best ears of all. I think the idea for a cat’s book may have come directly from Spock’s ears.

‘Star Trek Cats’ comprises ‘action’ shots of the cast in the original series. They are beautifully drawn and painted and yes, it’s growing on me even as I write this. How could I resist a Spock with his woolly hat on? There’s Bones declaring, ‘He’s dead Jim’ and a dancing green cat. I bow to the people who know these scenes and can relate to them. They will get much more out of this book than me.

I cannot honestly say this is a book I would buy unless I knew a really rabid ‘Star Trek ‘cat-lover’. They are out there and no doubt will buy.

Resistance is futile! Heck I wish they had met the Borg now, those pictures would be hilarious…
