Sherlock Holmes – The Stuff Of Nightmares by James Lovegrove (book review).

He’s back. Again! We can’t get enough of Sherlock Holmes and ‘The Stuff Of Nightmares’ is an original novel by James Lovegrove,  who has put together a version of the clever sleuth with added steampunk.

SHStuffOfNightmares

Watson is inches from death in a devastating bomb attack which takes place in the London railway station of Waterloo. He realises that Holmes needs to be involved as, ever, the police haven’t a clue. But it’s only when Mycroft piques Holmes interest over a masked vigilante in the East End and possible connections that Holmes is stirred into action.

As the pair investigate the mysterious and unnaturally strong Baron Cauchemar, they are drawn into the seedy underworld of Victorian life and slowly begin to realise that the Baron’s actions are only part of some ongoing conspiracy.

This is a fun action novel and presented in the style of the original stories gives it a sense of the period. ‘The Stuff Of Nightmares’ is at its best when the characters are interacting and when there are tricky things happening. It’s not so strong when the main character is telling Holmes and us his own back story as it seems to hold up the conclusion of the novel.

Overall, though, it makes a highly visual addition to the array of stories available about the super sleuth and the more the merrier.
