The Emperor Strikes Back? Michelle Yeoh brings her charm to Star Trek: Section 31 TV series (news)
Oh, joy! Just when you thought the Star Trek universe couldn’t get any more expansive, Paramount+ goes ahead and greenlights yet another spinoff. This time, we’re treated to the long-awaited Star Trek: Section 31, starring none other than Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh as the fan-favorite Emperor Philippa Georgiou. Because, really, who needs new characters when you can recycle the old ones for maximum nostalgia?
In a not-so-surprising turn of events, Emperor Georgiou finds herself joining the ultra-secret division of Starfleet known as Section 31. Apparently, her job is to protect the United Federation of Planets while simultaneously grappling with the sins of her past. Because nothing says “good TV” like a tormented protagonist with a dark history, right?
Michelle Yeoh, whose excitement to return to the Star Trek family is only rivaled by our anticipation for more space drama, couldn’t be happier. After all, she’s been dreaming of this spin-off since 2017. It’s good to know that even in the far reaches of the galaxy, persistence pays off.
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman just had to remind us that Yeoh was one of the first women to usher in this new golden age of Trek, and now she’s getting her very own spin-off. Talk about smashing glass ceilings in the final frontier.
Paramount+ and CBS Studios can barely contain their giddiness at having Yeoh return to the Star Trek universe. Domenic DiMeglio, Paramount Streaming’s chief marketing officer, even called her an “incomparable talent.” Well, she did manage to make Emperor Georgiou a fan favorite, so I guess we can give her that.
As we eagerly await the arrival of Star Trek: Section 31, it’s comforting to know that the Trekverse will continue to grow, much like the universe itself. Thanks to the brilliant minds at CBS Studios, we can look forward to even more mind-bending storylines, groundbreaking performances, and sarcastic witticisms from our beloved Emperor Georgiou.
And remember, in the words of Michelle Yeoh herself: “Live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
