May Madness: A veritable flock of 99 cents/pence genre e-books, I tell you.

It’s May Madness time again, that season of the year when Fantasy and Science Fiction authors rush to briefly mark down their books from full price to just 99 cents or 99 pence (plus taxes where applicable) for a single weekend. And when is that weekend, you ask? Why, this weekend, of course!

Happy reading and enjoy the list of participating authors.

The prices should be good for this Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May 2016. Many of the prices are already cut, though, if you’re reading this on Friday 6th May (Amazon take up to 48 hours to make good price cuts, so many authors wisely get in a little early).

The books are listed below by sub-genre:

One thought on “May Madness: A veritable flock of 99 cents/pence genre e-books, I tell you.

  • There are many, *many* such offerings. Honestly? I normally can’t be bothered.

Back before eBooks were possible, I saw stats from the American Bookseller’s Association indicating there were over 50,000 traditionally published books a year offered in print form in the US. That was about a thousand new books a *week*. Who would buy and read them all? Most did *not* get bought and read, never found an audience, and hit the remainder pile. The publishers gambled that enough *would* sell to cover the losses on the majority that tanked and make them enough money to remain in business.

Now we have the Internet, eBooks, and self-publishing/indie publishing. There are something like a thousand new books a *day*. Who will buy and read them all? Same answer as above, but the competitive bar has been raised dramatically higher.

You must write a really good book. You must expend the effort to make it attractive and readable on the reader’s device. You must put an enormous amount of effort into marketing, and letting your intended audience know you and your work exist. But beyond all else, you must have a benevolent $DEITY grant you an economy sized helping of *luck*, so that you will be noticed and find an audience. You will almost certainly *not* be lucky.

My scarce resource is the *time* to *read* the books. Price is not a factor in the selection process. If I want to read the book badly enough, I’ll pay the asked price. I have more traditionally published published books in my to-be-read stack than I have time for now. A cheap price on a new offering won’t change my priorities.

Demand is not infinitely elastic. Every book has a total possible market – the sum of all folks who might be interested in the kind of book it is. A cheaper price *may* make the book a bit more attractive to that audience. It will *not* magically expand it. There are books I would not take for *free*, because I have no interest in them or time to read them.

Another problem from my end is that I’m an older reader who has been reading SF/fantasy for 50 years. Too much of what I see know is Yet Another Variant on something that has been done to death decades ago. But newer writers simply haven’t read enough to be *aware* of what has already been done again and again and agian.

I wish these folks the best of luck, but barring strong recommendations form someone whose taste I trust, I am unlikely to look at any of them. I have more books I already own than I have time to read now.
