Justice League United: The Infinitus Saga Volume 2 by Jeff Lemire, Neil Edwards, Jay Liston and Jemomy Cox (graphic novel review).

If you’re interested in a detailed overview of the issue history, I recommend reading the indicia for ‘Justice League United: The Infinitus Saga Volume 2’. Justice League United #6-10; Justice League United Annual #1; Justice League: Future’s End 1; and Justice League United: Future’s End 1.  Rather than continuing from volume 1 above, the opening story sets five years in the future, revealing the fates of some characters in a new story.

Initially, I thought I had missed another unnumbered edition, but from the second story on, the focus shifts back to the arrival of members of the Legion of Super-Heroes. In the future, Ultra has transformed into the deadly Infinitus, wreaking havoc on planets. They are forced to travel to Earth in order to prevent Ultra from maturing further. The only issue is that they’ve shifted the event’s timeline to the present. As a result, the new Justice League and the LSH engage in a battle that dwarfs the scale of the Darkseid War. Which does bring an intriguing problem. Although the original Justice League disbanded, you do have to wonder why powerhouses like Superman couldn’t be bothered to go and find out what the heck was happening on their turf and help.

I can’t reveal too much about this plot due to spoilers, but writer Jeff Lemire truly brought the LSH to life in this work. Although the roll call identifies many of them, counting up the numbers on some of the double pages reveals that there are many more. While it’s unfortunate that Lemire didn’t have the opportunity to work with the LSH again, he demonstrated a deep understanding of the characters and team, transforming them into a formidable battalion with the assistance of the Justice League in their own book. I’m really impressed here.
