John Hurt, RIP: War Doctor no more.

Sir John Hurt has just passed away of Pancreatic cancer at the age of 77.

John was a staple stalwart of many genre movies and TV series, including V for Vendetta and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, he was the billionaire S.R. Hadden in Contact, he played Winston Smith in the film adaptation of the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, he was also in the Harry Potter film series (as the wand-maker Ollivander), the Hellboy films (2004 and 2008), and, let’s save the best till last, his chest-bursting part in the first Alien film.

On BBC TV, he played the War Doctor in Doctor Who and the voice of the dragon in the long-running fantasy series Merlin – he was also one of the voices in the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings film, playing Aragorn.

As for Spaceballs? Less said, the better! He is survived by his 4th wife, film producer Anwen Rees-Meyers.

Goodbye, John.
