Grimm Below The Surface: The Insider’s Guide to the Show (book review).

‘Grimm’ is looking to consolidate itself as a solid cult series and what is better than spending some money on a glossy coffee table book like ‘Grimm Below The Surface’ that will form a fine souvenir after the show has been sent to oblivion by studio bosses. All right maybe not yet but I’m looking for stronger storylines and more than the weekly tease about the overall story arc.

This insider’s guide to the show is a collection of articles based around the characters and the actors who play them. There is an episode guide for the first two seasons and that’s the carrot the makers are dangling to those arriving late to the party. If you are a committed fan you can enjoy 176 pages of high gloss photos and PR speak articles about our loveable cast.

The team have rebuilt the Scooby gang from previous successful outings and guess what, it works here as well. The creatives behind this do have form on shows like ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’, so they are good at assembling the cast who gel together. We have unlikely allies, the revelations that not all the furry people are bad and not all the smooth people are good. There is a comedy foil in the woefully underutilised Sergeant Wu, who I have high hoped for eventually.

I like this book and, although you can probably find a lot of content and facts on the Internet, there is nothing like sniffing a new book and riffling its pages. The cast are very easy on the eye apart from those Wesen! It’s likely to appeal to long time Grimm-Watchers rather than new fans. Much the same as an annual offered to kids at Christmas, this book does the job of expanding the Grimm universe and offering some inside information on the cast and crew. It doesn’t give any clues as to the future development of the show but that is always in the lap of the TV executives.
