Doctor Who: In The Forest Of The Night by Frank Cottrell-Boyce (Doctor Who review)
Be careful: There may be some unintentional spoilers although I won’t give away the ending.
After last week, I have to confess that I wasn’t sure if that episode could be beaten but ‘In The Forest Of The Night’ is very accomplished. A sudden ecological environmental change for the entire world and we have a real green planet, even if we only see it from the London perspective. I just hope its current major doesn’t think this is the way to go improve the capital for the better.
I’m not too sure about its feasibility. Well, not unless the oceans were covered as well, especially as they have more surface area than land. Then there is the matter of the icy polar regions which would surely melt.
That aside, the interplay of the characters is spot on even if the Doctor is struggling to come up with a solution as he pieces things together. Having the school kids there makes for a connection for children, just a shame it’s on so late at night but I suppose there’s always the Sunday afternoon broadcast.
Again, there’s a lot of emphasis on Clara. Between episodes, I did comment to John Rivers like with the emphasis on her that this was beginning to look like a build-up towards ‘The Clara Oswald Adventures’. I mean, its setting up all the right ingredients. This could even be seen as a test run for choice assistants. The accent on Coal Hill School even more so. I’m only guessing but I’ve added a poll in case you want your say on it.
It’s interesting seeing Peter Capaldi’s Doctor’s clothes are slowly evolving. Almost as though he hasn’t quite decided what will suit him yet. It does look like bow-ties, let alone collars are no longer cool, though.
Despite some criticisms, this is an interesting episode to lead up to the two-part finale.
