Dark Night: A True Batman Story by Paul Dini and Eduardo Risso (graphic novel review)

I wasn’t quite sure what I was buying with this book, ‘Dark Night: A True Batman Story’ by Paul Dini and Eduardo Risso, until I read it. Other publishers has done biopics of famous people but, in this case, getting one of their own, writer Paul Dini, tell about when he was mugged, seriously hurt and his recovery. In many respects, it was probably therapy for him to write this as he blends in characters he’s written into this with an accent on the Batman, pointing out that there’s no one like him in real life to save him.

The art by Eduardo Risso is very telling, matched by a paler colours and choices gives it an oddly realistic feel and surreal where it was needed.

Give yourself an hour to read it straight through. It certainly gives the perspective of what its like to be a victim of a serious mugging in America when they are not content to steal your wallet but leave you seriously damaged a well. One can only hope a similar fate happened to those two muggers.
