Dangerous Dream by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (ebook review).
‘Dangerous Dream’ by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl is a super short novella, only about 50 pages long so you could see this as a little teaser for the new series which starts with ‘Dangerous Creatures’. It sits in between ‘The Caster Chronicles’ series and the new ‘Dangerous Creatures’ series. Technically it’s ‘Dangerous Creatures 0.5’.
This time we’re focusing on the relationship between our part-incubus character Link and Dark Caster Ridley, with this novella being mostly about how Ridley is not great at coping with the fact that Link loves her. Essentially, she goes on a bit of a bender and winds up getting involved in a Caster game of chance with her powers as her stake. Since this is such a teeny tiny novella, that really is essentially all it’s about. Just a little something to whet the appetite, nothing to write home about.
Not having read ‘Dangerous Creatures’, I’m not sure how essential it is to read this 0.5 book in the series. Just going on the content of this story, I’m not sure that you need to read it to enjoy the rest of the new series. However, for a ‘Beautiful Creatures’ fans, it’s obviously a must to read this little story as well as the full-sized novels. It felt like a smooth link between the two series with this novella starting out being from Ethan’s point of view, then moving to Link and then finally to Ridley’s point of view.
Personally, I did enjoy this story. I prefer Ridley and Link as a couple to Ethan and Lena, so I’m glad this new series appears to focus on Link and Ridley. They seem to be a bit less emo and a little bit funnier. In fact, even though they are mostly non-human, they are a much more relatable couple of characters than Ethan and Lena in my opinion. My only real issue is with the length of this story. It felt as if I’d only just got into the story when it abruptly ended in a way that you would have to have ‘Dangerous Creatures’ nearby in order to continue reading.
Overall, a nice little novella to introduce the new series, which I now cannot wait to get my hands on! You can guarantee that if we’re following Ridley there is going to be plenty of drama.
