Cross Wars (2017) (Blu-ray film review).

I have to confess I wasn’t sure what to make of ‘Cross Wars’. The opening shows a lady going to a comicbook shop and handing over a stone and gets the second issue of a rare comic called ‘Cross’ and told to look after it. Back at home, she reads it to her son and then we get into the adventure, in live action, with three different groups. We jump back to the pair of them from time to time so the borderline as to whether the battle is real or comicbook is hard to distinguish. If it was the latter, it would take an entire mini-series to cover than a single issue.

The switch is then to various groups shooting out each other to take possession of various amulets from each group is pretty much the entire plot. Violence is extreme and as you don’t really get to know any of the characters particularly well, mostly cannonfodder. Are American comicbooks really that bad or depicted that way these days? No good rooting for any particular character or team simply because none of them are that well-dimensionalised to care.

The announcement at the end that there will be more films in this series should tell its own story. Someone is buying it. Actually, considering the body count, I’m surprised there’s anyone left for the next film.

The audio commentary is by director/co-producer/co-writer Patrick Durham and co-producer Gary T. Williams. Only when I started listening did I realise this is the sequel. They are very sparse speakers. It’s almost as though they haven’t watched the film before or caught up in the story.

I have to admit to having mixed feelings about this film, just don’t buy expecting anything more than it is.
