Crazy Mary Volume 1 by Michael Colbert and JK Woodward (graphic novel review).

Crazy Mary of the title is a lady who has been given enhanced senses. Unfortunately, she also appears to see things that aren’t there or at least not to other people, hence her moniker. Although some insight into how Mary acquired her abilities isn’t given until the last story, you don’t really need to know that much for the action stories at the beginning. Mary belongs to a three member mercenary team, although it appears she’s the one who chiefly goes in and the two men supply surveillance and back-up. The time is a little way into the future with flying cars and such but the likes of kidnapping and terrorism is still around, only more so. She also gets some of her orders from Roswell, a spectre from the future.

It’s a mixture of cyberpunk and ‘Blade Runner’ if you ever have to sum it up with a flick of the pages. Mary does have heart but she can also be utterly ruthless. As a gun for hire, that should be expected. No doubt further information about her background will come out in future volumes.

There ‘Crazy Mary’ tales were originally released in monthly comic format by Digital Webbing and according to the blurb there’s also some fresh material here as well. The art is very good with an excellent use of colour without making it look too gaudy. Most of the artwork is by JK Woodward with additional story artists William Blankenship and Ryan Sergeant. All of them are written by Michael Colbert. If there is anything to be critical of, it is that you don’t really see much of their world to think it other than being slightly generic cyber. Instead, you have to rely on the characters to sell the story. Fortunately, they do which might make it worth your while investigating.
