Beau Is Afraid is an upcoming American surrealist fantasy horror film written, directed, and produced by Ari Aster. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character, Beau, who is described as an “extremely anxious but pleasant-looking man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother and never knew his father.”
The film begins as Beau’s mother passes away, and he must make a journey home. However, this journey is not just one of grief and mourning, but also one of supernatural threats and wild, otherworldly experiences. As Beau navigates his mother’s death and his complicated past, he discovers hidden truths about his family and himself.
Beau Is Afraid is described as a “decades-spanning surrealist horror film set in an alternate present.” The ensemble cast includes Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Michael Gandolfini, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Richard Kind.
The film is co-produced and distributed by A24 as the company’s third collaboration with Aster, after Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019). The film’s title was announced in December 2022, changed from the working title of Disappointment Blvd. and is set to be released in cinemas in the United States by A24 on April 21st, 2023 (following a delay from its original 2022 schedule).
Horror and cinema enthusiasts are eagerly looking forward to this bad boy, for its unique and experimental storytelling, the talented director and the star-studded cast.
