Asteroid City: a star-studded film set to rocket into quirky cinema? (trailer)
Prepare to Blast Off into the Quirky Cosmos of Wes Anderson’s Latest Creation? Oh yes!
As the celestial bodies align in the cosmos, the stars are aligning right here on Earth for the release of Wes Anderson’s latest quirky concoction, “Asteroid City.” A glorious gathering of A-list talent orbits this peculiar tale of a 1955 Junior Stargazer convention, where scholarly competition, rest, recreation, comedy, drama, and romance collide in a fictional American desert town.
Don’t expect a black hole of boredom from this Anderson masterpiece. The trailer beams with an irresistible charm and kitsch, evoking memories of his past works and teasing a mystery to unravel at the theaters. With the U.S. government hot on the trail of an alleged alien encounter, the citizens of Asteroid City are quarantined during their annual celebration. Will our star-crossed Stargazers uncover the truth behind these otherworldly events?
The ensemble cast is a veritable supernova of talent, with luminaries such as Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Tilda Swinton, and Jeff Goldblum lighting up the cinematic sky. Even the background stars of this production, including costume design by multiple Oscar-laureate Milena Canonero, are set to dazzle.
From its humble beginnings as a romance film in 2020 to a “group of brainy teenagers” in 2021, “Asteroid City” evolved into the cosmic spectacle it is today. Principal photography, initially planned for Rome, took place in Spain’s Chinchón, where desert landscapes and a mock train station were crafted to set the stage for this out-of-this-world adventure.
With Alexandre Desplat returning for his sixth collaboration with Anderson to compose the score, and the reunion of Anderson and Focus Features after “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Asteroid City” is set for an interstellar launch. The film will premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, rocketing into a limited U.S. release on June 16th, 2023, before expanding wide on June 23rd, 2023.
